Tale of the Night Fairies

Went to another of those shows by BCL.. This one was quite good. The first short movie was titled 'Breakfast'. Apt beginning to a show. One phrase that described the show.. Cocaine induced rant on toast. The guy started off normally enough talking about how toast was the elixir of life and then went on to startling facts like toast being the backbone of the silk route in china and the staple food of the mesopotamians. Then he shed some light on the dark side of toast and the serious damage caused by improper usage of this powerful object. Was quite enjoyable and illuminating.
The next one was about a rickshaw driver 'Hero' with a passion for filmi music (He knew English really well as he listened to the english channel for an whole hour everyday!!) and dreams of putting all heroes in Bollywood out of action once his career there began. This super confidetn ever smiling Hero had a perfect girlfriend - who else but Aishwarya Rai!Left me waiting eagerly for this guy to enter teh tinselworld. Would make for a fresh change!
The last one was the best of them all.. the tale of the night fairies. It revolved around the sex workers in Calcutta. Remember the conglomeration of these sex workers a couple of years ago. Was making big news back then and this movie deals with the people involved with that. These women were demanding labour rights and dignity. They put forth their views quite lucidly and i was left with a different and more cheerful view of the lives of these women. One of them, especially, was quite funny and smart. Her favorites were Beer, and cigarettes and her work. Shed been to several foreign countries inspite of not knowing english and had made clear the stand of these indian sexworkers much to the amazememnt of the outsiders. Another real character we saw was a robust woman who wanted to take on the police and beat them soundly for their meddling with her work. She did get her chance an sued it quite effectively id say. The movie did rather gloss over the other aspect of forced prostitution. But it was stil a movie worth watching.
After the movie, went to the Bike and Barrel. My first time there. The place struck me as highly impressive especially with the Norton hanging from the roof(the light being on was pretty trippy), the old adverts on the walls(one of them was for Irish snuff with the tagline "a pinch of snuff a day keeps teh flu away!!) and of course the vintage cigarette packs. Dint really try out any of the cocktails.. saved it for the next visit there.
On the whole a very enjoyable weekend!! For once all plans actually worked out :)
